Those masterful theologians Monty Python wrote a wonderful piece of comedy around the sale of a dead parrot. The misrepresented sale sees said parrot, sold as live, being returned. The shop keeper states the parrot is ‘sleeping’ and will soon ‘voom’, to the retort ‘that parrot wouldn’t voom if you poured petrol over it and set light to it’ ‘Now I will avoid my inbuilt inclination to draw a parallel to the C of E but there is certainly a parallel to our engine. I have spent much of this week covered in oil, up to my elbows in engine and quite frankly I am sick to the back teeth with it. Like the sketch above I am pining for the fjords and I would pay money to spend one night in the company of my wife. I don’t want to be here, I have had enough and I want to go home. Sadly I also know I can’t do that. There is nobody else involved who has any technical knowledge at all, nor the ability to adequately deal with the engineers – when they have time to be here. I am mindful of Deuteronomy 31:6
‘Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.’
My moments in between clanging around trying again with spanners and taking a break are filled with one question. Not ‘where is God when it hurts?’ Mr Yancy but where is God on this bloody boat? Like Job I am mentally shaking my fist at the unrelenting tyrant that called me to be in this situation and suddenly like Job, I received an answer!
I hate using Easy Start but in truth we wouldn’t have got this far without it. With my answer top of mind we started her up and I went through the same old routine of trying to get her set up properly. The engine sounds like an angel on a cloud. Once set up, I tried changing what popped into my head and after half an hour, still warm, the engine started first time on the key. This is the first time since April! I left it much longer and went to restart her again and the starter motor failed! I think we have solved the problem but we now need a new starter motor to find out. The one on board was rebuilt in late 2016 so I suspect it is due to water ingress after the boat filled with water coming into Edinburgh.
I swopped to Isaiah in my head, took a deep intake of breath and prepared to have another go tomorrow.
‘So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.’
